William Hutt was born in 1920 and raised in Toronto. During World War II he earned the Military Medal for his frontline services as a medic. Subsequently he graduated from Trinity College University of Toronto, where he started acting at the Hart House Theatre. In the late 1940s Hutt made his debut in Ontario summer stock companies and was recruited by Ottawa's Canadian Repertory Theatre. The Shaw Festival is a major not-for-profit theatre festival in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Canada. It is the second largest repertory theatre company in North America.
